MINERAL SALTS

Mineral salts are chemical elements which enter into the composition of organisms and which are present in animal and plant food. They occur in ionic form, like Ca²? for calcium and Cl– for chlorine. These are substances essential to the body.

Mineral salts

Mineral salts are inorganic compounds essential for many biological processes and bodily functions. They play a crucial role in human and animal health.

  • Calcium (Ca): Essential for the formation and health of bones and teeth, blood clotting, nerve transmission, and muscle contraction.
  • Phosphorus (P): It works in tandem with calcium in the formation of bones and teeth. It is also an important constituent of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and ATP, an energy molecule.
  • Potassium (K): Plays an essential role in fluid balance, nerve transmission, muscle contraction (including that of the heart), and blood pressure regulation.
  • Sodium (Na): Combined with potassium, it maintains fluid balance in the body, plays a role in nerve transmission, and is essential for regulating blood pressure.
  • Magnesium (Mg): Involved in many enzymatic reactions, bone and tooth formation, nerve transmission, and muscle contraction.
  • Chlorine (Cl): Associated with sodium and potassium, chlorine helps maintain water balance, participates in digestion as a component of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
  • Iron (Fe): Essential for the transport of oxygen by hemoglobin in the blood, and plays a role in many enzymatic reactions.
  • Zinc (Zn): Necessary for growth, cell division, the immune system, and macronutrient metabolism.
  • Copper (Cu): Involved in the formation of red blood cells, bone and connective tissue health, and iron metabolism.
  • Iodine (I): Essential for the production of thyroid hormones which regulate metabolism.
  • Selenium (Se): Functions as an antioxidant, contributes to the health of the immune system.
  • Manganese (Mn): Necessary for the metabolism of bones, cartilage and lipids.
  • Fluorine (F): Contributes to tooth health by strengthening tooth enamel.
  • Chromium (Cr): Participates in carbohydrate metabolism.
