CHLORAMINE

Chloramine is a chemical compound composed of nitrogen and chlorine. There are several types of chloramines, but the most common is monochloramine, which has the chemical formula NH₂Cl. Chloramine is often used as a disinfectant in water treatment, especially in drinking water distribution systems.

Properties:

• Monochloramine is a more stable disinfectant than free chlorine, meaning it can maintain its disinfectant properties over longer distances in water distribution networks.
• It is less chemically aggressive than free chlorine and generates fewer potentially harmful disinfection by-products.

Uses:

• Water Treatment: Used to disinfect drinking water in water supply networks.
• Swimming Pools: Sometimes used as a disinfectant in swimming pools.

Safety:

• In general, chloramine is considered less irritating to the skin and eyes than free chlorine in water treatment systems and pools.
• However, prolonged exposure to high concentrations of chloramine can cause respiratory problems and irritation.
