METHYLENE CHLORIDE
Dichloromethane or methylene chloride is a chemical compound that appears as a colorless and volatile liquid at room temperature, emitting a relatively strong sweetish odor that may cause discomfort to some individuals. Its smell becomes noticeable at concentrations as low as 200–300 ppm.
Overview
Description:
Dichloromethane, also known as methylene chloride (classified as R30 in the list of fluorinated gases and refrigerants).
Application:
Methylene chloride is used as a propellant for aerosols, as an extraction solvent in the food and pharmaceutical industries, as an expansion agent for polyurethane foams, and as an intermediate in the synthesis of bromochloromethane and other chemicals. It is used in the formulation of adhesives and paint and varnish strippers. Additionally, it is employed in metal cleaning, extraction of fats and paraffins, manufacturing of films and cellulosic fibers, production of electronic components, and in dental prosthetics where it is associated with methyl methacrylate.
