Sulfamethoxazole

Sulfamethoxazole is a chemical compound from the sulfonamide family. It appears as a white crystalline powder, odorless, and is slightly soluble in water. It is commonly used in combination with Trimethoprim to create a drug called cotrimoxazole, which is effective against a broad range of bacteria. Sulfamethoxazole works by inhibiting bacterial folic acid synthesis, preventing their growth.

Applications:

1. Treatment of Bacterial Infections:

   • Primarily used in treating urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, and gastrointestinal infections.
   • Used in combination with Trimethoprim in cotrimoxazole to treat severe infections like Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia in immunocompromised patients.

2. Biomedical Research:
