Ciprofloxacin base appears as a white to slightly yellow crystalline powder, odorless, and stable at room temperature. It is poorly soluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). As an antibiotic from the fluoroquinolone family, it inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, preventing DNA replication and killing susceptible bacteria.
It is widely used in the formulation of drugs, including tablets, injectable solutions, and oral suspensions.
